About Jay Key Service

History

lock services, rekey lock, broken lock
Jay Key Service, Inc. started in 1944 in Springfield, MO, in the back of the "A&B Cycle" store, by Leslie Jay, Sr. Making keys for bicycle and motorcycle locks, the business grew to include residential and commercial work. In need of a retail space with a "store front", the business moved to 215 W. Walnut.

After the early death of Leslie, Sr. in 1948, his sons Leslie, Jr. and Richard partnered in business. In 1949, gunsmithing and safe work was added to the business to form "Jay Key and Gun Service".

In 1959, with expanding sales and services, the business moved to 407 South Avenue. "Shakespeare" fishing tackle repair, dog collar tags and burglar alarm systems were added.

January 1976, Leslie, Jr. retires. Richard Jay's wife Shirley, his son Rick Jay and son-in-law Terry Reichert join the family business. Guns and reloading equipment sales grew. Expansion was needed again, so in 1978 the move was made to their present location at 1106 St. Louis St. In 1982 gunsmithing, gun sales, and all side line businesses were discontinued. "Jay Key Service" would focus on locksmith and safe services that would form today's company.

In 1990 Shirley Jay retires and Richard semi-retires. Richard's daughter Debbie Reichert (Terry's wife) takes over the bookkeeping and office responsibilities. In 1994, with added business, Richard resumes full time service. To increase focus on residential and commercial work, mobile automotive service was discontinued. "In shop" auto service would still remain.

In 2007, after two years of declining health, Richard Jay died at age 81 after over 61 years of working with family and friends. His work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to customers and employees still guides Jay Key Service today. With family members and long time employees, we hope you will see our tradition of great quality service.
